Beautifully Human / Atalya Atherton

As we continue our series today, Beautifully Human...

We focus on the beauty of humans and the power in their stories…

Through telling their stories we hope to connect this world. To spread strength, love, and humanity...

To show a common thread of beautiful humans…

This week we go to Swindon, United Kingdom with Atalya Atherton to hear her incredible story...

I met Atalya earlier this year as we both worked aboard the Norwegian Pearl.

We spoke quite a few times in passing and I could just feel an awesome energy.

Atalya is always smiling and quick to a laugh.

The positive energy she brings even in short interactions is truly wonderful.

Let’s all be beautifully human…

Tell me a story that shaped your life…

- I graduated from professional dance college in 2017 with not a clue on which way I wanted to go with my tricks and talent! I did a few incredible jobs such as dance for Rak Su on the X Factor Finals & perform on a west end stage but by far the job that has changed my life for the better, was my 6 months on the Norwegian Pearl! The people I met & the places I saw are memories that have sculpted me into the person I am right now! Some of my best friends live in all different countries & I feel blessed to have shared these experiences with them!

Tell me a story that almost ruined your life…

- A little somber but here we go! When I was 13 my parents decided to part ways, there was never a single ounce of hurt or despise between them but they simply fell out of love. My dad was/is a recovering alcoholic & drug abuser who was constantly in & out of rehab since I was 7.

When they divorced, things got a little messy & my dad ended up trying to take the lives of my mum, my sister & myself in a multitude of scenarios. This really affected me later in life as I tried to push a lot of these memories to the back of my head as opposed to facing them head on but they came to sabotage me in around 2015 at the ripe old age of 17! I went into a deep, scary depression which resulted in a lot of sleepless nights crying into my pillow & therapy appointments but I’m very proud to say that I did/and have come out the other side stronger!

Tell me a story that enriched your life…

- When I was 12, I auditioned for a brand new mainstream TV show for kids that was being broadcasted in the UK. I originally auditioned for the role of a girl named “Frankie”. She was the protagonist & kind hearted girl of the group. I kept being called in & called in & eventually got down to the finals for the role. I received a phone call a few weeks later to say that I unfortunately hadn’t been cast but to keep my summer free as they had something else planned.

I later found out that the writers had written a new character into the show for me to play as they believed I brought something to the cast!! So little 12 year old Tally ended up playing “Flora” the badass gang leader that didn’t take crap from anyone AHAHAHA! If you’ve met me, you know that’s totally true as well ;)! I met so many incredible people during my time on set & it really sparked my love for the arts that I have now!

Tell me a story of life…

- My niece, Imogen, was born on 20th December 2016 & it was easily one of the happiest days of my life! My sister had a lot of complications during labour & at one point her heart even stopped!

I was up in the north of the UK performing in a show but receiving a text at 10:27pm with a photo of my beautiful “Moggy” was a euphoric feeling I will never forget. Me & my sister have such an incredible bond & I’m so thankful that myself & Imogen are doing the same! She’s nearly 4 now & she is such a funny little girl, she has the most incredible personality & such a big heart!

What would you want the world to know about you…

- I have THE BEST mum! No questions, no doubts, THE BEST mum in the world! She works so hard every single day & she is constantly on the move but she has overcome incredible amounts of hardship in her life! She lost her eldest brother in a ski accident when she was 11, her husband of 20 years was a massive liability & constantly put her through the hardest times EVER, but you would never know! She has the strongest work ethic & is constantly teaching me new lessons in how to better myself & work hard to achieve want I want too with my life. I couldn’t be prouder to have the mum that I do, and I only hope that I can be half the mum that she is!

What did / do you miss most during covid 19…

- I missed a lot of things but I missed my family. My sister has a daughter, Imogen, and I adore her! We always play together & sing together & we had finally started to connect since me being on the ship for 6 months. Then COVID happened & due to us living in different households & my sister working in the Hospital, we couldn’t see them for 5 months! We are such a close family so being apart from each other for 5 minutes is hard let alone 5 months! I just wanted to wrap my sister & my niece in my arms but the world had other plans!

What brings you the most joy / smile the most...

- I am a MASSIVE foodie!! I love good food! It actually makes me so happy! I love trying local dishes from new places & trying out new recipes to find new things I love! I also adore coffee! I worked at Starbucks for 2 years so know all the secrets but I bloody love me an Iced Oat milk Sugar Free Vanilla Latte!!!!

If you were given a plane ticket to anywhere, where would you go…

- I would be on the first flight to Oceanside, California to visit my wonderful boyfriend Brock! We met during my contract onboard the Norwegian Pearl & we’ve been together for nearly a year! Long distance is so tough but being with someone so supportive & loving from 5000 miles away, is the best!!

What brought you to where you are at in life today…

- A lot of hard work! I don’t like to blow my own trumpet ever, but I do work very hard. I’ve always liked to make money & treat myself, it always feels so rewarding when you’re able to do things so independently! There have been times where I’ve worked 4 or 5 jobs at a time & I’ve been absolutely exhausted but I wouldn’t have it any other way!! In dance, in my “muggle” work or just in life, I like to see my hard work pay off, and that’s what I see today. A girl who has worked very hard to get to where she is, and I’m finally happy with the girl I see in the mirror.

What is your most prized possession…

- Probably my journal. I write in my journal nearly every single day & it just feels like such a safe space for me! NO ONE is allowed to look in it, besides me. It gives me a lot of comfort to be able to release steam at the end of a bad day or praise myself for achieving something by just writing. Not thinking, just letting my hand write.

Traveling is my life, and has also saved my life. It shows the beauty of other cultures. tell me a story of your favorite travel moment…

- My favourite travel moment was onboard the Pearl around this time last year! My friend Katie & I decided that on our last day in Italy we wanted to do a whistle stop tour of all the places we hadn’t seen so far. So we paid a taxi driver €240 to drive us around for the day and take us to the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain & so many other places around Italy! It was such a hectic & crazy day but it was so much fun!!!

PS. If Katie’s reading this, she did something SCANDALOUS in the back of the taxi but I’ll let her tell you that!

What do you do for work… and why…

- I am a performer. A thespian if you will HAHA! I act, dance & sing on stage or in front of the camera for minimum wage & not a lot of job stability. “Why Tally” I hear you ask, well, BECAUSE IT MAKES ME HAPPY! There is honestly no better feeling than stepping out onto a stage to perform to an audience full of people & to get that applause at the end of the show, means everything.

What was your first tattoo...

- My first & only tattoo so far is on the inside of my left ankle! It’s a wave with the sunset behind it to represent my time spent at sea! I wanted to get something else rather than an anchor because “everyone who’s done cruise ships gets an anchor” but now my $6 unique wave scene looks like an upside cherry!!!! That’s what I get for picking a spontaneous matching tattoo with 7 other people!

If you had the ear of everyone in the world, what would you say to them...

- Be kind. The world is full of too much hate & hurt & we need more kind people to walk among us. A smile goes an extremely long way & you never know what someone may be going through so the simplest of smiles or “hello”s or “how’s your day” might just be the best thing in that persons day! Always, be kind.
